Edited by John Podgorski BA Hons, MSc, CMILT.

Welcome to the August 2016 edition of Busmopolitan.

Looks to be a series of gains and losses, or “swings and roundabouts” over this month.
National Express has achieved domination on internal services within Stansted Airport, with Panther Travel being the loser here, and also to Stephensons on local school runs. The seemingly mercurial rise of Stephensons continues.
The Tollesbury depot of Hedingham closed for good on 1st August, after a week long “swansong” of tidying up of loose ends. Kelvedon became fully operation again from that date.
TGM Network Colchester has virtually disappeared into history, with all but 3 of the fleet having received Arriva colours by the end of August.
And after much speculation, the Greater Anglia railway franchise has been awarded – to incumbent Abellio, for 9 years. Big changes are expected over the life of this new tenure.

ABELLIO GREATER ANGLIA.
On 10/8/16, it was announced that Abellio had been re-awarded the Greater Anglia rail franchise, until 2025. New rolling stock will be introduced over this time.
Class 90 electric locomotive 90003 is now in Abellio colours, ex National Express. It has lost its ‘Raedwald of East Anglia’ name plates.
Further Class 321 EMUs with unit numbers now in smaller font are 321314/28/43, 321430. 321328/43 have them in white, below the solebar. 321314/430 have ones in black, on the solebar. These smaller numbers may only appear on one end of the units. 321443 also now has grey upholstery, ex green, which is an internal refresh. The Class 360 ‘Desiro’ EMUs are also being refreshed, with grey upholstery and grey vestibule carpets replacing the old purple material.
At Ilford (IL) depot, the old ‘B’ shop, the paintshop and one other building have been demolished to make way for extra sidings for CrossRail.

AIRPORT BUS EXPRESS.

Founder and proprietor George Glew passed away in late August, after a long illness. He was in his late 70s. Originally a London bus driver, he formed Tony Glew Private Hire Services in the late 1980s, following a spell as a plastics injection moulding engineer.
Busmopolitan recalls the original vehicles being a Ford Transit/Dormobile, WBM 150S – ex Graham’s of Kelvedon and F821 KJN, a Renault Trafic/Devon Conversion minibus bought new.
The original depot was in the Hythe district of Colchester, and moved to Great Tey in 1997. The fleet grew to cover all sizes of bus and coach, with double deckers run between 2008 and 2013. Total fleet strength averaged around 12.
Work wise, the “economy” end of the private charter coach market was served, along with educational contracts, including special needs home to school.
The business continues to trade.
