Welcome to the November 2020 edition of Busmopolitan.

From 5th November a second UK National Lockdown was put into place (until 2nd December). Also known as a Tier 4, this differed from the first lockdown in the spring, in that schools stayed open, along with more businesses. But hospitality, leisure facilities and “non essential” shops were again closed. Bus and rail services continued as usual levels, but perhaps not surprisingly, were quieter. During the day, traffic on the roads etc seemed normal, but by night everything went eerily quiet. In London, the centre was definitely emptier, although the suburbs remained busy.

NATIONAL EXPRESS. Coaches received a poppy emblem on the front. Several Levantes surplus at Start Hill and Luton, due to the post Covid slump in airport traffic, have moved to NX West Midlands at Walsall for NX white coach use and an Amazon contract. Start Hill allocated coaches have also been spreading their wings due to the closure of Gatwick depot, and the taking “in house” of several routes from NX contractors, such as Go South Coast. All of the Mercedes Citaros used on car park shuttles and airside at Stansted have been withdrawn, due to the drop in demand for air travel. White coaches withdrawn, also due to a decline in airport traffic are Scania K440EB6/Levantes 177/85-88/90/97/99, 204-208 (BK14 LFR/Z, LGA/C/D/F/V, BK64 FKL, BG65 TGK/N/O/U, BX16 CMK). Sold is Scania K340EB6/Levante 19 (FJ57 KHY) which had latterly been a driver trainer.

PANTHER TRAVEL. Acquired via Ensign is ADL/Enviro 200 YX58 DWN, it is for component recovery only. Dennis Dart/Alexander Dash BIG 8843 had been sold in late summer, but the sale fell through and it remains as a static store at Parkeston depot.

RAILWAY MISCELLANEOUS. 14/11/20: Rake of Touax and Hanson bogie hoppers being loaded in Chelmsford yard. Yeoman JHA bogie hopper 19316 was still in the defective siding at Bow at the end of November, but had been joined by then, by a similar Tourax bogie hopper.

ROG. 6/11/20: 37608 on Leicester-Orient Way light loco. 25/11/20: 37608 on 0Z37 Orient Way-Fenchurch St light loco and return.

ROMAN COACHES, COLCHESTER. Has ceased operations, with the O licence not being renewed. Work has passed to a new company called Swift Travel. The Roman Cars phv business continues.

RYANAIR. Reported an 80% loss of trade (due to Covid-19), compared to the same period in 2019.

SJH TRAVEL, CANVEY. Sold is Volvo B10M/Van Hool M860 TYC.

STAGECOACH EAST LONDON. New are BYD/ADL E400-EVs 14130-33. They are for TfL173 (Beckton-Goodmayes), TfL174 (Dagenham-Harold Hill). More are due. 14133 was trialled at Selkent at Catford before reaching East London. ADL/Enviro 400 19000 (LX55 HGC) orig 18500 ‘Spirit of London’, has been preserved by the company.

UNO. From 23/11/20,TfL school routes 692, 699 (Potters Bar-Winchmore Hill) were taken over from Metroline. Pioneer BYDs BYD1471-75 are being used. These were also ex Metroline.

VECTARE, CHELMSFORD. Volvo B7RLE/Wright BK12 NZS, was used on school duplicates for Arriva Southend in November.
