Edited by John Podgorski, BA Hons, MSC, CMILT.

Welcome to the July 2018 edition of Busmopolitan.
The news this month is dominated by major changes at First Essex. Clacton depot and Braintree outstation closed at the end of July, with just four operating centres remaining, at Basildon, Chelmsford, Colchester and Hadleigh. 40 years ago (in 1978), First’s predecessor, Eastern National Omnibus Company, had 16 garages. The bus industry now works in a very different world.

On 19/7/18, it was announced that the industrial dispute about the future role of guards had been resolved. Since October 2017, there had been 10 one day strikes in connection with this. There had been concerns that the introduction of the new fleet of Stadtler trains from 2019 would dispense with the need for guards, but they will continue to be present, although there will be a greater element of customer service to their role. Most importantly, the guard role will continue to be classed as safety critical.
