Welcome to the June 2017 edition of Busmopolitan.

It is with deep regret that another terrorist attack in London has to be reported.
At 2208 on Saturday 3/6/17, a white Renault Master van was used to run over pedestrians on London Bridge. Once on the south bank of the River Thames, the van crashed into railings and its three occupants jumped out. Armed with knives they ran into Borough Market, randomly stabbing people as they went. Within 8 minutes, police were on the scene and the suspects shot dead. This was not before 8 civilians had been killed and 48 injured. This came less than two weeks since the suicide bombing in Manchester which claimed 21 lives.

The Capital suffered another catastrophe on 14th June, when in the early hours of the morning, fire broke out in Grenfell Tower, a high rise block of flats near Shepherds Bush. The blaze quickly spread to much of the building, claiming at least 72 lives, injuring at least 78 others, and making several hundred people homeless.

Then just after midnight on 19/6/17, a Citroen Relay luton van was deliberately driven into a group of people outside a mosque at Finsbury Park, killing one and injuring 10 others. The van driver, a 47 year old white male from Cardiff, was quickly apprehended.

Our thoughts go out to all affected by these dreadful occurrences.

Between 18th and 21st June, Great Britain experienced a heatwave, with the highest temperature being 34 degrees celsius; recorded at London Heathrow Airport on 21st June. The transport system struggled, with speed restrictions imposed on the railway, road surfaces melting, and people “sweating it out” on “poorly ventilated” buses and trains. Such weather had not reached the UK since June 1976. But this was “chilly”, compared to Phoenix, Arizona and Qatar, where temperatures were in the 40s.

Finally, First Essex has a pair of surprise vehicular arrivals. See below.

It was later found the bus had been speeding, and the driver was dismissed. This was the third serious incident on the southern part of the Cambridge Guided Busway in 14 months.
