Welcome to the April 2018 edition of Busmopolitan.
Surprise news was a consultation by First Essex about closing its Clacton depot and Braintree outstation. It was subsequently announced that this would happen – at the end of July.
On the railway front, Greater Anglia’s planned depot at Brantham seems to have “hit the buffers”, due to various legal technicalities. Whether these can be overcome remains to be seen, and an alternative site may have to be sought.
The first of the surplus GTR Great Northern Class 365 EMUs have found a new use – with Abellio Scotrail.
Aviation: Well beyond the Essex area, but of significance was , on 18/4/18, the first fatal commercial aircraft incident in the USA since 2009. South West Airlines Boeing 737 N772SW was on a routine New York to Dallas flight (over Pennsylvania), when the port (nearside) engine exploded, showering the airframe with debris and breaking a window. Due to the subsequent cabin decompression, a female passenger was partially sucked through the hole. Although she was rescued by fellow passengers, she sadly died from her injuries. The aircraft was new in 1998, and an investigation later concluded that a catastrophic engine turbine failure had occurred, with metal fatigue being a possible cause. In Busmopolitan territory, Ryanair and Jet2.com operate large fleets of ‘737s. No doubt safety inspections will be made here also.
