Welcome to the December 2018 edition of Busmopolitan.
(Simon Austin)
Seasons Greetings and Happy New Year. This is Trustybus Scania Omnicity YN53 RXY at Harlow on 31/12/18.
As we leave 2018, it has been another year of interest on the Essex and District public transport scene. Highlights included the closure of the First Clacton depot, and expansion by Hedingham and Panther on the “Essex Sunshine Coast” as a result.
Then there was the acquisition on NIBS by Stephensons, and Stephensons moving its Braintree base three times in 12 months.
On the railways; CrossRail’s full opening was delayed, but the new Class 345s are entering traffic, with the first ‘315s going to the scrap yard. The new Stadler ‘Flirt’ trains for Greater Anglia also started to arrive towards the end of 2018. There was also much engineering work at the London end of the Great Eastern Main Line, resulting in rail replacement buses and coaches over many weekends.
In the air, the collapse of Cobalt and Primera made the headlines, along with disruption at Stansted Airport caused by strikes on Ryanair.
And finally, on the water, it was farewell to the old Woolwich Free Ferries. But their successors will arrive early in 2019, to continue linking the opposite banks of the River Thames.

From 1/12/18, TfL25 was shortened to run as City Thameslink-Ilford. Its western terminus had previously been at Tottenham Court Road. Following my observations on now defunct EOS buses last year, I can add that the two Scanias ( EZO/EZT) have been repaired and are for sale on the Coach and Bus Week website by Swallow coaches @ £35,000 each.
Presumably by now, all the other vehicles that were stored at North Weald have gone.
Regards,
Nigel Grist.
Many thanks for your update, Nigel.
